Polyester Fabric Guide for DTF Transfers
Polyester requires lower press temperatures than cotton, and the wrong settings can scorch the fabric or trigger dye migration. Here is what you need to know before pressing DTF transfers on performance jerseys and athletic wear.

Polyester Is Not One Fabric
One hundred percent polyester covers a wide range of substrates, from ultra-thin moisture-wicking performance mesh to heavy poly canvas. DTF adheres well to all of them, but the correct press parameters change based on fabric weight and, critically, the type of dye used in the garment. Knowing which category your blank falls into is the starting point for any poly press job.
Temperature: Lower Is Right on Poly
Polyester is heat-sensitive in two distinct ways. First, thin poly fabrics can scorch or melt at temperatures suitable for cotton. Second, reactive dyes in polyester can reactivate with heat and migrate upward into the transfer adhesive, discoloring your print. Both problems are prevented by keeping temperatures down. The standard range for 100% poly is 285 to 295°F, not 315°F.
- 100% poly performance jersey: 285-290°F / 12 seconds / medium pressure
- Poly-cotton blends above 50% poly: 290-295°F / 12-15 seconds / medium pressure
- Heavy poly canvas or twill: 295-305°F / 15 seconds / medium-firm pressure
Dye Migration on Dark and Red Poly
The most common failure mode in polyester DTF is dye migration. It happens when heat reactivates the reactive dye in the fiber and that dye bleeds upward through the adhesive layer into the ink. The result is a print with a pink or gray cast over light ink areas. Red, royal blue, dark charcoal, and forest green poly garments are the highest-risk substrates.
For any 100% red or dark performance jersey, spec a poly-blocker DTF transfer. The poly-blocker barrier prevents dye from reaching the ink layer, producing a clean result on the same substrates that would otherwise fail. Golden DTF uses USA-made commercial inks with a full CMYK single-pass process that works cleanly with poly-blocker on any reactive-dye poly substrate.
Performance Jerseys and Athletic Wear
Moisture-wicking fabrics and athletic knits are typically 100% polyester or a high-poly blend with chemical finishes applied to the surface. Those finishes affect how the transfer adhesive bonds to the fabric. Press at 285°F on any moisture-wicking jersey. Run a test press on a scrap piece before committing to a full production run, and inspect adhesion by pulling gently at the transfer edge after a cold peel.
What You Can Press Without Poly-Blocker
White and light-colored poly garments rarely trigger migration because dye concentration in the fiber is low. Cotton-poly blends below 50% poly can usually be pressed at 295 to 300°F without a barrier layer. Standard 100% poly in non-reactive colors like white, light grey, and cream presses cleanly at 285 to 290°F. Reserve poly-blocker for dark and red reactive-dye poly, where it is genuinely needed.
