Who this is for

Built for the buyers who know the job in advance.

Every Golden product page names the specific buyers this product actually serves. If you do not see your job in this list, look at the comparison block below. The right product for your job may not be this one.

  • Political campaigns and advocacy groups

Rally distribution, canvasser identification, event giveaways. The 1.25 inch and 1.5 inch sizes are the industry standard for campaign runs.

  • Bands, musicians, and touring merch programs

Cheap merch add-on that clips to bags, jackets, and lanyards. Buttons distribute at $2 to $3 retail with $0.30 to $0.50 unit cost.

  • Conferences, trade shows, and event organizers

Name badges, attendee identifiers, session tokens, sponsor badges. The 2.25 inch and 3 inch sizes read from across a booth.

  • Small business swag programs

Restaurant staff flair, brewery tap merch, coffee shop stickers, retail counter giveaways. Cheap enough to hand out without a budget conversation.

  • Apparel brands adding pin merch

Add a button pack to the merch drop for cross-sell. Buttons ship well, break minimum-shipping bundles at retail, and generate impulse purchases at the checkout.

Do not buy this if

We will tell you when to buy something else.

Every competitor makes money when you order the wrong product. Golden makes more when you order the right one. Here are the jobs this product is not built for.

  • You need outdoor-durable branding for hardhat or equipment ID.

Buttons are water-resistant but not waterproof. Extended outdoor exposure, rain contact, and dishwasher-adjacent use will corrode the metal shell over months. For durable outdoor branding use die-cut vinyl.

    Consider Custom Die-Cut Vinyl Stickers
  • You need custom shapes beyond standard circles.

Our shell dies are fixed circular sizes. Custom-shape buttons require tooling that runs 4 to 6 week lead and 500 unit minimums. If shape matters more than pin-back attachment, use die-cut vinyl instead.

    Consider Custom Die-Cut Vinyl Stickers
  • You are decorating apparel.

Buttons pin to apparel but they are not a decoration method for the fabric itself. If you need a permanent design applied to the garment, DTF is the right route.

Consider Custom DTF Transfers by Size
  • You need less than 15 buttons.

Per-unit pricing stays constant regardless of quantity but hand assembly and shipping economics do not scale down. Most orders come in 25-piece packs. Below that count, the shipping cost dominates the order.

Production detail

What you actually get, from the shop floor.

No marketing adjectives. Real manufacturing detail: how the product is built, what it feels like, and where it applies.

How each button is assembled

Four-component assembly: full-color printed paper face, protective Mylar laminate, metal shell (steel), and a metal pin-back with a safety spring. The Mylar laminate adds scratch resistance and a subtle gloss finish. The pin-back is rust-resistant steel with a bend-resistant safety spring rated for repeated wear. Every button is hand-assembled on a 1 inch, 1.25 inch, 1.5 inch, 2.25 inch, or 3 inch shell die.

Sizes and use cases per diameter

Buttons range from roughly 0.15 oz (1 inch) to 0.42 oz (3 inch) in weight. Diameter runs from 25.4 mm to 76 mm. Shell thickness is 3.5 mm across all sizes. Pin-back protrudes 6 mm from the back plate. Face is flush with the shell edge, no visible dead space between print and rim. Overall the buttons feel substantial in hand, not cheap plastic. That weight is a signal of quality that clients read immediately at a booth or a rally.

Where custom buttons fit best

  • 1 inch: business card inclusion, lapel pins for staff identification, small giveaway swag.
  • 1.25 inch: campaign standard, rally distribution, band pin packs.
  • 1.5 inch: event name tags, brewery tap merch, boutique brand pin.
  • 2.25 inch: conference badges, sponsor buttons, brand-forward statement pieces.
  • 3 inch: statement buttons, campaign lead-piece merch, larger illustrative designs.
  • Apply to lanyards, backpack straps, jacket lapels, hat brims, bag flaps, and canvas totes.

Artwork recommendations for buttons

File spec, resolution, and gotchas.

Every file spec we would tell you on the phone if you called before uploading. No mystery, no ambiguity, and no guesswork.

  • 1300 DPI at final button size. A 1.25 inch button needs 375 pixel wide art minimum.
  • 2Design with bleed. The printable area wraps slightly around the shell edge. Safe zone is 0.125 inch inside the button diameter.
  • 3PNG, PDF, AI, EPS, or SVG. Circular crop is applied automatically at production.
  • 4Text below 6 pt disappears under the Mylar laminate at reading distance. Size up smaller text.
  • 5High contrast reads better than low contrast at button distance. A design that looks great at 8 inches on your monitor may read as mud at 1.25 inches on a lapel.
  • 6Full-bleed background is standard. Do not leave white space at the edge unless you want a white ring around your design.
Questions we get

The answers most competitors will not put in writing.

What are the actual sizes and which one should I order?

Five sizes: 1 inch, 1.25 inch, 1.5 inch, 2.25 inch, and 3 inch. 1.25 and 1.5 are the industry standard for campaigns and event giveaways. 2.25 and 3 inch are the statement sizes for conferences, sponsor badges, and larger designs where detail matters. 1 inch is for lapel-pin identification and small tokens.

Are the buttons waterproof for outdoor use?

Water-resistant, not waterproof. The Mylar laminate handles rain, sweat, and everyday wear. Repeated immersion, dishwasher cycles, or extended outdoor exposure will eventually corrode the metal shell and separate the paper face. For genuinely waterproof outdoor branding use die-cut vinyl stickers.

How is a button constructed and can it come apart?

Hand-assembled from four components pressed together: printed paper face, Mylar laminate, metal shell, and pin-back with safety spring. The assembly is mechanical, not adhesive. Under normal wear the components stay together for years. Extreme force (crushing under a heel, sitting on a full backpack) can pop the pin-back off, but the shell itself is robust.

What is the minimum order and does the price go down at higher quantities?

No hard minimum but pricing is fixed per unit. Volume does not step down. Most orders come in 25-piece, 50-piece, or 100-piece packs sized to distribute at events. Bulk orders over 500 units get a quote directly with reduced per-unit pricing.

How fast will my buttons ship?

Standard production is 1 to 2 business days from order placement to ship. Hand assembly adds a real production step beyond simple printing, so orders over 500 units may add a day. Rush production is available for a fee if you have an event date on the calendar.

Can I mix designs in one order?

Yes. Multi-design orders are common for band packs, event badges, and awareness campaigns. Upload each design as a separate file and specify quantity per design. Production runs each design in a single pass, so mixing does not add turnaround time.

What is the safe zone for my design vs the button diameter?

Print extends across the full face and wraps slightly around the shell edge. Design in a way that keeps text and critical elements 0.125 inch inside the button diameter. Full-bleed backgrounds are standard, but text placed too close to the edge disappears into the shell wrap.

Reprint Guarantee

If we mis-produce it, we reprint it free.

Every Golden DTF order carries the same written guarantee. Email us within 14 days with your order number and a photo, a production lead reviews it within one business day, and approved reprints ship free with tracking. You never re-upload and never re-pay.

Color off the file you sent

If the printed transfer does not reproduce the file you uploaded, allowing for the difference between a backlit screen and printed ink, we reprint it. We calibrate our press against the same target ICC every day and keep a press log for every run.

Missing ink or dropout

White ink dropouts, thin black lines that did not lay down, or missing detail from a small text run: if it left our shop that way, we reprint it.

Film delamination before press

If the PET film separates before you press the transfer, that is a materials defect, not user error. We track film lot numbers per production run.

Wrong size or wrong file

If our team packed the wrong artwork or produced at the wrong size, we cover the reprint plus the reship.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about dtf transfers.

What sizes do custom buttons come in?
Five standard sizes: 1", 1.25", 1.5", 2.25", and 3". Each size uses a different metal back assembly and printing area. The 1.25" and 1.5" buttons are the most popular for promotional giveaways and event swag.
How are custom buttons constructed?
Each button is assembled by hand from four components: a full-color printed paper face, a protective Mylar laminate, a metal shell, and a metal pin-back. The Mylar laminate adds scratch resistance and a subtle gloss finish. The pin-back is rust-resistant safety steel.
What is the minimum order for custom buttons?
There is no hard minimum, but pricing is set per individual button so single-unit orders are not cost-efficient. Most customers order in quantities of 25, 50, or 100 for event distribution. Bulk orders of 500-plus units are available on request.
What is the turnaround time on custom buttons?
Standard production is 1 to 2 business days from order placement to ship. Hand assembly adds a step beyond simple printing, but production capacity is sized for fast turnaround on standard orders up to 500 units. Larger orders may add a day.
What file format do you accept for button artwork?
PNG, JPG, PDF, AI, EPS, and SVG. Resolution should be 300 DPI at final button size. Note that the printable area is slightly smaller than the button diameter to account for the bleed wrap around the shell edge. The upload step shows the safe print zone.
Are the buttons waterproof?
The Mylar laminate is water-resistant for everyday wear including rain and sweat. They are not intended for full submersion or dishwasher use. The metal shell and pin-back are rust-resistant for normal apparel wear.
