Heat Press Dwell Times: How Long to Press DTF
Temperature sets the ceiling, but dwell time determines whether a DTF transfer bonds correctly. Too short and adhesion fails. Too long and you damage the fabric. Here are the correct dwell times by substrate.

Why Dwell Time Is Half the Equation
Dwell time is how long the press stays closed with pressure applied to the transfer. During that window, the adhesive powder melts and bonds to the fabric fiber. Too short: the adhesive does not fully cure, edges lift, and the print separates in the wash. Too long: heat penetrates deeper than needed and causes fiber damage, shine marks on fleece, or discoloration on heat-sensitive fabrics. Both are common mistakes and both are fixed with a single dial adjustment.
Dwell Time by Fabric
These are the correct dwell times for Golden DTF transfers at standard press temperatures. Dwell time and temperature work together. Do not shorten dwell to compensate for a higher temperature setting.
- 100% cotton: 15 seconds
- 100% polyester: 12 seconds
- Cotton fleece (8-10 oz): 18-20 seconds
- Tri-blend (poly/cotton/rayon): 15 seconds
- Nylon: 15 seconds
- Canvas: 20 seconds
The Two-Stage Method for Heavy Fleece
On fleece thicker than 8 oz, a two-stage press produces more consistent results than one long dwell. Press at 315°F for 8 seconds, lift, reposition with a cover sheet over the transfer, then press again at 315°F for 8 more seconds. The first stage melts the adhesive into the looped surface; the second stage drives it into the cotton fiber beneath.
This method works especially well on Comfort Colors 1717 and Gildan 18500 hoodies. Both retain heat longer than lighter blanks, and the repositioning step between presses gives the adhesive a chance to settle evenly before the second bond. Total dwell is 16 seconds split across two presses, which is less than a single 18-second press but produces a cleaner result.
Signs Your Dwell Time Is Wrong
Short dwell shows up as transfer film that lifts with the print when you pull, edges that curl back within a few washes, or a print surface that feels dry and non-embedded rather than flush with the fabric.
Long dwell shows up as shine marks or glazing on the fabric surface, a stiff area around the print border, or discoloration on light-colored fleece. Both problems are correctable by adjusting dwell time alone. Do not compensate by raising or lowering temperature.
Pressure Works With Dwell, Not Instead of It
Dwell time assumes adequate pressure. Light pressure means less contact between the transfer adhesive and the fabric surface, and extra dwell time does not fully compensate for that gap. For cotton and fleece, use medium-firm pressure. For thin performance poly, medium pressure prevents permanently compressing the weave while still providing the contact needed for full adhesion.
