Short version, straight from the floor.
Gildan is the volume workhorse of the decorated apparel industry. The 5000 heavy cotton is the most-printed blank in North America by unit volume, and for good reason: it presses predictably, accepts DTF at standard cotton settings without drama, holds its shape through a school-program wash cycle, and costs less per unit than any comparably constructed blank in the market. For event shirts, fundraiser tees, school spirit wear, and corporate programs where the budget matters more than the hand feel, Gildan is the right call.
Using Gildan for a boutique brand launch. The 5000 is a traditional-fit, 5.3 oz blank. It does not compete with Bella+Canvas or Comfort Colors on hand feel or retail shelf presence. For a brand charging $40 or more per tee, the blank has to justify the price. Gildan does not justify boutique retail pricing.
Pressing the DryBlend 8000 at cotton settings without a migration check. The 8000 has poly content. On dark reds and burgundy colorways, the poly dye can migrate into the white ink layer at 305 F. Test one sample on the specific color before committing to a 200-unit run.
Forgetting press-twice on the Heavy Blend fleece. The 18500 hoodie and 18000 crewneck are fleece-pile fabrics. Press once at 300 F for 5 seconds to flatten the pile, then press again at 305 F for 10 to 12 seconds to bond the transfer. Skip the first press and the transfer lifts in the wash.
Ordering flat sizes on a large Gildan program. 50 shirts in equal quantities of S, M, L, XL is not how demand distributes. A normal program runs roughly 5% S, 15% M, 30% L, 30% XL, 15% XXL, 5% 3XL. Flat sizing leaves you with 25 XS and out of XL. Order to the curve.
A production-floor definition, not a spec sheet.

For event shirts, fundraiser tees, school spirit wear, and corporate programs where the budget matters more than the hand feel, Gildan is the right call.
The Gildan lineup has three key categories. Core cotton (5000, 2000) is for decoration jobs where fabric feel is acceptable at standard weight. DryBlend (8000, 12500) is for jobs where the customer wants a poly blend: slightly lighter, moisture-wicking adjacent, and a tighter knit that photographs well. Heavy Blend fleece (18000, 18500) is the workhorse crewneck and hoodie for school programs and staff gifts. Every SKU presses at standard cotton settings. No surprises, no special handling.
Where Gildan underperforms: retail shelf presence and hand feel in a boutique context. The 5000 is a 5.3 oz traditional fit tee. Put it next to a Bella+Canvas 3001 and the Gildan feels boxy and heavier. For a brand founder selling a $50 tee, that comparison matters. For a school boosters club selling a $20 spirit tee to raise money for a field trip, the Gildan 5000 is the right choice and the Bella+Canvas is a waste of margin.
DTF on Gildan is straightforward. Press at 305 F, 10 to 12 seconds, firm pressure. The heavy cotton weight requires slightly more pressure than a fashion blank to get full ink saturation into the fabric. No dye migration issues on straight cotton. The 8000 DryBlend has poly content, so on dark red and burgundy DryBlend tees, test for migration before production. The Heavy Blend fleece needs the standard press-twice technique: first press flattens the pile, second press bonds the transfer.
