Gildan Heavy Blend Fleece DTF Settings

The Gildan 18500 is an 8oz 50/50 cotton-poly fleece that needs 315°F for 18 seconds at medium-firm pressure to drive adhesive through the thick pile without scorching the cotton component or triggering dye migration from the poly.

Why Fleece Needs More Dwell Time

The Gildan 18500 has a 8oz face fabric with a thick looped pile on the inside. That pile insulates the surface from the heat press, slowing the rate at which the adhesive layer reaches full activation temperature. At 15 seconds, the adhesive on a Gildan 18500 is still partially cured. At 18 seconds, it reaches full bond strength.

The 50/50 cotton-poly construction adds a secondary concern: the polyester component can release dye under sustained heat. Keep the temperature at 315°F rather than pushing to 325°F or above. The longer dwell time at the correct temperature is safer than a shorter press at higher heat.

Exact Settings for the 18500

Press at 315°F for 18 seconds at medium-firm pressure. Pre-press for 5 seconds before positioning the transfer. Cold peel after 25 seconds. On light or white colorways, apply poly blocker spray and let it dry for 30 seconds before pressing.

Medium-firm means the platen is seated firmly enough that a dollar bill cannot be withdrawn without tearing. This pressure level is needed to push the adhesive into the fleece surface texture. Too light on fleece and you get adhesion only at the raised fiber tips.

Pre-Press and Poly Blocker Protocol

Pre-pressing is more important on fleece than on any other blank. Fleece absorbs and holds moisture from folding, warehousing, and ambient humidity. A 5-second pre-press drives that moisture out of the print area before the transfer goes down. Skipping this on fleece almost guarantees adhesion failures at the center of the print.

For any Gildan 18500 in white, cream, natural, or light heather colorways, apply poly blocker to the print area and allow it to dry fully before pressing. The 50% polyester content is enough to cause visible dye migration on light colors over the first several washes without it.

Common Fleece Pressing Problems

The most common issue with the 18500 is surface adhesion that looks good at press but peels away from the fleece pile within 10 washes. This happens when pressure was too light or dwell time was too short. The adhesive bonded to the fiber tips instead of penetrating into the fabric structure.

The second most common issue is a visible wash-out of color on light hoodies without poly blocker. Once dye migration has happened, it cannot be reversed. The solution is always prevention at the press table, not a fix after the fact.
