Poly Blocker for DTF: What It Does, When to Use It
Poly blocker is a spray-on barrier that prevents polyester dye molecules from migrating into your DTF transfer at press temperature, and it is not optional on any fabric above 50% polyester or on light-color 50/50 blends.

What Causes Dye Migration
Polyester fibers are dyed by driving dye molecules under pressure and heat into the fiber structure, where they become trapped as the fiber cools. When you apply a heat press at 285-315°F, that same combination of heat and pressure can reverse the process, releasing dye molecules from the fiber.
Those released molecules migrate upward through the adhesive layer and into the ink film, where they create a pinkish, yellowish, or grayish cast under white and light-colored areas of the print. This effect is not visible at press time and typically appears gradually over the first several washes.
When Poly Blocker Is Required
Use poly blocker on any fabric above 50% polyester. This includes 100% poly athletic jerseys, 60/40 or 65/35 poly-cotton blends, tri-blends with rayon and poly, and performance knit fabrics regardless of their color. Also use it on 50/50 blends in white, cream, light gray, light blue, or any pastel colorway where dye cast would be visible.
Pure cotton fabrics do not need poly blocker. Cotton is not dye-sublimated. If you are pressing on a 100% cotton garment like the Gildan 5000 or Bella 3001, poly blocker is an unnecessary step.
How to Apply Poly Blocker
Shake the can thoroughly before each use. Hold the can 8-12 inches from the garment surface and apply a light, even mist over the entire print area. Do not soak the fabric. A light coat is all that is needed. Apply it in a well-ventilated area.
Allow the poly blocker to dry completely before pressing. This takes 20-40 seconds depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. Pressing over wet or tacky poly blocker traps solvent between the adhesive and the fabric surface, creating adhesion failures in the worst case and a visible cloudy texture in the best.
Press Settings After Applying Poly Blocker
Poly blocker does not change your target press temperature. For polyester and poly-blend fabrics, still press at 285°F for 12 seconds at medium pressure. The blocker works by forming a barrier at the fiber surface, not by lowering the temperature at which dye release occurs.
If you are using a lower temperature specifically to reduce dye migration risk and have also applied poly blocker, you have double protection. On borderline fabrics like 50/50 blends, this combination, using 285°F plus poly blocker, is the safest approach for light colorways.
