Dye Migration and DTF: How to Prevent It
Dye migration is what happens when heat causes polyester dye molecules to leave the fabric and tint the DTF ink film from below, usually appearing as a pinkish or yellowish cast on white areas of the print after several washes.

The Chemistry Behind Dye Migration
Polyester fibers are colored using disperse dyes, which are driven into the fiber structure under heat and pressure during manufacturing. The dye molecules become physically trapped inside the fiber when it cools. When heat is applied again, as during heat press operations, those dye molecules can re-mobilize and migrate upward through the adhesive layer and into the ink film above.
This process is gradual and cumulative. It does not happen fully in the first press cycle. Each wash cycle at elevated temperature re-activates trace amounts of migration. Over 5-15 washes, the accumulated cast becomes visible as discoloration in white, cream, or light gray areas of the print.
Which Fabrics Are at Risk
Any fabric with polyester content above 35% is at migration risk for light-color prints. This includes: 100% polyester athletic fabrics, 50/50 cotton-poly blends like the Gildan 18500, 60/40 CVC blends like the Next Level 6210, tri-blends with poly and rayon, and performance moisture-wicking fabrics of any construction.
Dark-color garments in any blend are not at visible risk because the base color of the garment masks any migration cast. The problem is specific to light-color garments where the released dye contrast against the white or light ground of the print.
Prevention: Poly Blocker and Lower Temperatures
Poly blocker spray creates a temporary barrier at the fiber surface that traps dye molecules before they can reach the adhesive. Apply a light even mist over the print area, let it dry 20-30 seconds, then press. This is the most effective single-step prevention and is standard practice for any polyester or poly-blend garment in a light colorway.
Reducing press temperature also reduces migration. For polyester fabrics, press at 285°F rather than 315°F. For CVC, press at 295-305°F. Lower temperature reduces the kinetic energy available to mobilize dye molecules. Combined with poly blocker, you have near-complete protection on most fabrics.
When to Reconsider the Fabric
Some sublimated polyester fabrics (heavily sublimation-printed jerseys, performance tops with all-over prints) have such high surface dye concentrations that migration is extremely difficult to prevent at any practical press temperature. For these substrates, DTF is a high-risk application regardless of poly blocker use.
If a customer insists on DTF decoration on a heavily sublimated jersey, run a test piece, wash it 5 times, and inspect before committing to the order. In some cases, the best answer is to recommend embroidery or a woven patch instead. That recommendation builds trust far more than a batch of faded prints.
