Fleece Shrinkage and DTF: How to Prevent Cracking

Cotton and cotton-blend fleece shrinks most in the first two washes, and a DTF transfer pressed on a blank that has not been accounted for can crack or wrinkle in the print area if the design spans more than 10 inches on a heavy fleece.

Why Fleece Shrinks

Cotton fibers shrink when exposed to heat and water because the fiber's natural tension, which was stretched during spinning and weaving, releases when those conditions relax it. Cotton-poly fleece blends shrink less than 100% cotton fleece because the polyester component is dimensionally stable, but any blend above 50% cotton will still shrink measurably in the first 1-2 washes.

Most blank suppliers pre-shrink their fleece in production, but pre-shrinking does not eliminate shrinkage. It reduces it. A Gildan 18500 listed as pre-shrunk can still lose 3-5% in body length and width over the first two home washes.

How Shrinkage Stresses a DTF Transfer

A DTF transfer is a film bonded to the fabric surface. When the fabric shrinks, the underlying fibers move. The transfer film stretches with them up to a point. For small chest prints under 8 inches wide, fabric movement during shrinkage is minimal and the transfer accommodates it without visible effect.

For full-front prints above 10-12 inches wide, the cumulative shrinkage across the print area introduces enough tension to cause micro-cracks in the ink film if the fabric has not been pre-shrunk. The cracks typically appear at the edges of the design or at areas where the ink layer is thinnest.

Pre-Shrinking Protocol

Wash and dry blank fleece before pressing if you are printing full-front designs above 10 inches. One wash cycle at 40°C followed by a medium dryer cycle removes 80-90% of the residual shrinkage. Let the garment cool fully before pressing.

For production orders where pre-washing is not practical, use an extended pre-press of 8-10 seconds. This is not as effective as a full wash cycle but does remove residual moisture and create some stabilization of the surface fibers before the transfer is applied.

Design Size Recommendations for Fleece

For fleece blanks that have not been pre-washed, keep full-front prints under 12 inches wide. Side-to-side, the fabric has more shrinkage latitude than top-to-bottom, so wide designs are more at risk than tall, narrow designs.

If your customer wants a true full-front print on a fleece hoodie, pre-wash the blank and inform the customer that the garment has been pre-shrunk and is sized for post-wash fit. This is standard practice in quality decorated fleece production and the right way to deliver a durable large-format fleece print.
