Hoodie Weight Guide: How Fleece Weight Affects DTF
Hoodie weight ranges from 7oz fashion fleece to 13oz workwear fleece, and each weight tier has different press settings, shrinkage behavior, and surface texture that directly affects DTF adhesion, print feel, and end-use positioning.
Weight Tiers Explained
Hoodie weight is measured in ounces per square yard of fabric. Fashion fleece runs 7-8oz and is the most popular tier for retail boutique and streetwear applications because it is lighter, drapes better, and feels more premium. Mid-weight fleece runs 8-10oz and represents the dominant decorator market tier (the Gildan 18500 at 8oz and Independent SS4500 at 8.5oz live here). Heavyweight fleece runs 10-13oz and is used for workwear, outerwear, and cold-weather garments.
Weight directly correlates to pile density. Heavier fleece has a denser, thicker pile that holds more moisture, insulates more effectively, and requires more press dwell time for DTF adhesive to fully activate through the fabric surface.
Press Settings by Weight
7-8oz fleece: 315°F for 16-17 seconds at medium pressure. The lighter pile activates faster than heavier fleece. 8-10oz fleece: 315°F for 18 seconds at medium-firm pressure. This is the standard fleece press setting and applies to the Gildan 18500 and Independent SS4500.
10oz and above: 315°F for 20-22 seconds at firm pressure. Heavyweight fleece requires the extra dwell time to push heat through the thicker pile to the adhesive layer. Pre-press for 8 seconds on any heavyweight fleece to reduce moisture and bring the surface temperature up before the transfer contacts the garment.
Surface Texture and Adhesion
Fashion fleece typically has a smoother, more tightly knit face side than mid-weight or heavy fleece. This smoother surface makes better initial contact with DTF adhesive and produces a slightly cleaner print edge. The tradeoff is that light fleece has less fiber depth for the adhesive to anchor into.
Heavyweight fleece has a more pronounced pile texture that can show through a large-area solid DTF print if the pressure is insufficient to fully seat the adhesive into the surface. Medium-firm to firm pressure on heavyweight fleece is essential for solid coverage over large print areas.
Recommended Weights by End Use
Fashion and boutique retail: 7-8oz. These customers are buying the garment as much as the decoration. A lighter, drapier fleece commands higher retail price and fits streetwear and lifestyle brand aesthetics.
General decorator market, team orders, corporate: 8-8.5oz. The Gildan 18500 and Independent SS4500 hit this tier. Reliable, predictable, priced right for volume work. Workwear, cold climate, and outdoor end uses: 10oz and above. These customers value warmth and durability over hand feel.
