Comfort Colors DTF Press Settings: 1717 and Beyond
Comfort Colors garments are garment-dyed and ring-spun, which makes them behave differently under the heat press than standard wholesale blanks. These settings apply to the full Comfort Colors line including the 1717.
What Makes Comfort Colors Different to Press
Comfort Colors garments are garment-dyed, meaning the blank is assembled and then tumble-dyed as a finished piece. That process creates a fabric surface that is slightly irregular compared to standard ring-spun cotton. The good news for DTF: garment-dyed cotton has no dye migration risk at standard press temperatures. The dye is set and inert under the heat press. The challenge is the surface texture, which needs a pre-press step to flatten before you lay the transfer.
Recommended Settings for Comfort Colors Garments
These settings apply to the full Comfort Colors line including the 1717 tee, the 1466 hoodie, and the 4500-tier fleece.
- Temperature: 315°F
- Dwell time: 15 seconds
- Pressure: medium to medium-firm
- Peel: cold peel only (wait at least 15 seconds after pressing)
- Pre-press: always (5 seconds with no transfer to flatten the surface and drive out moisture)
The 1717 Specifically
The 1717 is 100% ring-spun cotton at 6.1 oz. It presses consistently at 315°F for 15 seconds. Despite being lighter than it feels, the garment-dye process makes the surface slightly denser than raw-spun cotton of the same weight, which is why DTF adheres so cleanly on it.
Pre-press every 1717 before laying the transfer. Surface variation across dye lots is subtle but real, and a five-second flat pre-press eliminates any risk of uneven adhesion. DTF Whites on Garment-Dyed Colors
Comfort Colors colorways are intentionally uneven. That is the aesthetic. DTF does not care. The transfer adhesive bonds to the cotton fiber, not to the surface dye, so print adhesion is consistent even when the base color varies slightly across the chest or between pieces in the same colorway.
On heavily saturated colorways like Crimson, Pepper, and Washed Denim, white ink in the design reads as a bright, clean white. There is no dye bleed into the print at 315°F. Whites are reliable on Comfort Colors at standard DTF settings.
Wash Durability on Comfort Colors
Golden DTF transfers on Comfort Colors 1717 hold through 50 or more wash cycles at 40°C when pressed at the settings above. One durability note specific to the enzyme-washed surface: it is slightly more prone to mechanical abrasion than raw-spun cotton over time. Advise customers to wash inside out and tumble dry on low to extend print life.
