DTF Hang Tags: How to Design and Use Them

What DTF Hang Tags Are
A DTF hang tag is a transfer applied to a small piece of fabric (typically twill, canvas, or poplin), then attached to the garment via a tag pin or sewn on as a woven-label alternative. They give clothing brands full-color logo tags without the 500-piece minimum that woven label suppliers typically require. For small batch and startup brands, they are the most accessible custom label format available.
Designing for the Format
Design your hang tag at actual print size, 300 DPI, PNG with transparent background. Common hang tag sizes are 1 x 2 inches, 1.5 x 2.5 inches, and 2 x 3.5 inches. Keep text legible: the minimum readable text size at DTF resolution is 6pt at print size. Brand name, website, and size indicator need clear contrast against the background color of the patch fabric.
Patch Fabric Selection
White or natural canvas gives you full color fidelity because DTF ink relies on a light fabric base. Dark patch fabrics produce a muted color result because DTF does not print white ink on dark substrates without a white underbase.
Cotton twill is the most common hang tag substrate. Pre-cut blanks in standard sizes simplify production: press the transfer, attach the tag. Linen and canvas produce a more premium hand feel than standard poly-cotton twill and are worth specifying for higher-end product lines.
Attachment Methods
Tag pins (plastic loop anchors): the fastest, most retail-standard method. A standard tag gun works on most twill patches. Position the pin at the top center of the patch for clean presentation.
Sewn attachment: more permanent and adds a structured label feel. Loop the patch through a seam or bartack it at the hem. Common for premium branded apparel positioning where the hang tag is meant to stay on the garment rather than be removed before wear.
