Pressing DTF on Comfort Colors Fleece: Settings
Comfort Colors garment-dyed fleece has a washed texture variation that affects adhesion consistency, and getting reliable DTF results requires a longer pre-press and verified temperature on a fabric surface that is softer and more irregular than standard fleece.
Garment-Dyed Fleece vs Standard Fleece
Standard fleece like the Gildan 18500 is piece-dyed or yarn-dyed before cut and sew, producing a consistent, uniform surface texture across the garment. Comfort Colors fleece is garment-dyed after construction, which creates intentional texture variation: slightly raised areas, slightly compressed areas, and color depth variations across the print zone.
This texture variation means DTF adhesive will make slightly different contact with the fabric surface in different areas of the same print. The result is not failure, but it does require a more consistent press setup to compensate.
Pre-Press and Surface Prep
Pre-press Comfort Colors fleece for 6-8 seconds, slightly longer than standard fleece. The washed surface has more residual irregularity and moisture variation. A longer pre-press normalizes the surface temperature and moisture content across the print area before the transfer contacts the fabric.
On crinkled or heavily textured areas of the garment, use a silicone pad on top of the transfer during the press cycle to improve pressure distribution. This is especially useful on pieces with pronounced garment-dye texture in the center chest area.
Press Settings
For Comfort Colors cotton fleece, press at 315°F for 18 seconds at medium-firm pressure. The all-cotton construction means no dye migration concern. The 18-second dwell time compensates for the insulating effect of the fleece pile and the slight moisture retention of the washed cotton.
Cold peel after 25 seconds. The washed cotton surface holds heat longer than a standard tee. Rushing the peel on soft cotton fleece is the primary cause of adhesion failure at the fine detail edges of a print.
Post-Press Care
Wash Comfort Colors fleece inside out in cold water and tumble dry low. Hot wash and high heat drying stress the transfer bond and accelerate the washed-cotton texture changes that are normal in garment-dyed fleece. Golden DTF transfers survive 50-plus wash cycles at 40°C with proper care.
The garment-dyed color will naturally soften and develop character over washes. DTF transfers wash with the garment without issue. Customers who are new to garment-dyed products should be informed that color evolution is a feature of the product, not a defect.
