The Gildan 5000 is a 5.3oz 100% cotton open-end spun tee. It is the dominant value blank in the decorator market for a reason: consistent fabric weight, predictable shrinkage, and a surface that bonds DTF transfers reliably without special treatment.
The cotton-only construction means no dye migration risk, so you do not need poly blocker or reduced temperatures. The 5.3oz weight puts it in a middle tier, heavier than premium retail tees like the Bella 3001 (4.2oz) but lighter than the Gildan 5.3oz is still thick enough to benefit from a proper pre-press step.
Exact Press Settings
Press DTF transfers on the Gildan 5000 at 315°F, 15 seconds, medium pressure. Peel cold: wait at least 20 seconds after removing the garment from the press before pulling the carrier film. This is the setting that produces a durable bond rated for 50-plus wash cycles at 40°C with USA-made commercial inks.
If you are pressing on a dark colorway, verify that your platen temperature is actually hitting 315°F with a press thermometer. Dark dyes absorb heat differently. A cold platen reading on a dark shirt is the most common cause of premature edge lifting on black and navy Gildan 5000s.
Pre-Press Protocol
Pre-press the Gildan 5000 for 3-5 seconds before positioning the transfer. This step removes moisture and lint from the print area and flattens the seam and collar roll that can create high spots under the platen. Skip this step and you introduce inconsistent pressure across the print area.
On new garments fresh from the bag, a brief pre-press also sets the fabric surface slightly, which improves adhesive contact. This is especially noticeable on bulk runs where garment temperature and moisture vary between pieces.
Troubleshooting Gildan 5000 Issues
The most common failure on the Gildan 5000 is edge lifting after 5-10 washes. In almost every case, the cause is one of three things: temperature too low, pressure too light, or the transfer was peeled hot.
Cracking after washing almost always points to pressure that was too heavy, which over-compresses the ink film and makes it brittle. Reduce pressure one increment and re-test on a fresh blank.
