About This Product

Gold and Silver Foil DTF Transfers create a premium metallic finish that elevates apparel, accessories, and promotional products. The foil is printed as its own transfer, so the metallic areas land exactly where your artwork says they should.

HOW IT WORKS. You receive a printed foil transfer. If your whole design is metallic, that is the only transfer you need: press it once and you are done.

IF ONLY PART OF YOUR DESIGN IS METALLIC, it is TWO transfers and TWO files. One file holds ONLY the metallic areas, with the full color removed. The second file holds the full-color CMYK areas with the metallic areas removed.

WHAT SIZE TO MAKE THEM. If the metallic sits INSIDE your artwork (metallic text, metallic accents), export both files on the SAME canvas at the SAME size and move nothing. That is the easiest way to get exact registration: the foil lands precisely where it belongs. If instead the metal OUTLINES the design or extends past the color, the two are genuinely different sizes. Size each file to its own artwork. Each half is priced on its own square inches.

PRESS THE FOIL FIRST, THEN THE CMYK ON TOP. That order is not a preference, it is the only one you can actually line up: the gold and silver are opaque, so once foil is down you cannot see through it to place anything. The CMYK transfer is translucent, so you can see the foil underneath it and position it accurately.

Priced at $0.12/sq inch for the foil, with the CMYK portion billed at the standard DTF rate of $0.06/sq inch. The two halves are quoted separately, on their own dimensions, and appear as two lines in your cart. No minimum order.

Who This Is For

This product earns its place on these programs.

If your customer sits in one of these categories, this is the transfer to quote them. If not, scroll to the alternatives below.

  • Boutique apparel brands running short retail drops where the price point supports a premium finish.

  • Bridal, bachelorette, and anniversary decorators where metallic branding is what the customer is paying for.

  • Corporate anniversary and awards programs building milestone apparel in low volume.

  • Concert and tour merch shops where a foil detail lifts a $28 tee to a $45 tour tee.

  • Small clothing brands testing a limited edition SKU before committing to screen-printed foil at volume.

When Not to Order This

If this describes your job, look elsewhere.

This is where we tell you not to buy. If any of these fit your program, the alternative in the callout is the smarter quote.

  • Photographic or gradient designs

Foil prints as one flat metallic with no tonal range. Gradient and photorealistic art has nothing to resolve into once the color is stripped out of the foil file.

    Try Standard Custom DTF Transfers

    Full CMYK for photo-real work.

  • High-abrasion workwear and children's play clothing

Foil is a laminate. It survives 40-plus wash cycles under normal care, but it will scuff and shed on a hoodie that gets dragged through a jungle gym.

    Try Standard Custom DTF Transfers

Same fabrics, more durable ink layer.

  • Tiny reversed text and hairline detail

Anything under 1.5 pt stroke weight is too thin to hold a clean metallic edge. Fine detail cracks or fills in.

    Try Fauxbroidery

Raised UV holds fine detail with dimensional relief.

Recommended Substrates

What this actually presses well on.

The metallic areas are printed as their own DTF transfer. A fully metallic design is one transfer pressed once. A design with metallic accents on full-color artwork is two transfers, foil pressed first and CMYK pressed on top. Best on cotton and other fabrics that take the full 338F press. Heat sensitive blends run under a lower ceiling and give a softer, less reflective metallic.

Presses cleanly on

  • Ringspun cotton, 4.3 to 6 oz weight

Boutique retail tees, the target market for foil.

  • Cotton/poly blends and tri-blends

Fashion tees and heather colors where a metallic accent pops.

  • Cotton fleece hoodies and crew sweatshirts

Bachelorette and anniversary programs, where the finish is the story.

Avoid or approach with care

  • Textured surfaces like French terry face or knit ribs

The metallic layer cannot conform to the surface, coverage goes broken.

  • Water-repellent polyester shells

Adhesive skips on the DWR coating and the foil peels within a few washes.

How It's Built

Material construction and behavior.

Standard DTF construction with the metallic finish printed into the transfer itself. Nothing is laid over the design at the press.

  • 1

Layer stack: printed metallic face, white underbase where the garment calls for it, polyamide adhesive on the fabric side.

  • 2

Foil colors: gold and silver are stock. Rose gold, copper, holographic, and prism are available on 24 to 48 hour lead time.

  • 3

Press cycle: 300 to 315°F, 12 to 15 seconds, medium to firm pressure, cold peel.

  • 4

Two-transfer designs: foil goes down first, CMYK presses on top of it. Foil is opaque, CMYK is translucent, so that is the only order you can register.

  • 5

Durability: 40-plus wash cycles cold, inside-out, tumble low, no fabric softener.

Fit, Weight, and Feel

What it feels like on the finished garment.

The foil finish sits slightly proud of the fabric surface. After the re-press it settles to a slightly matte metallic rather than a wet mirror, which is the durable state and not a defect. Hand is softer than a screen-printed foil at the same age.

Weight

Similar hand to standard DTF plus a fine metallic laminate

Hand

Smooth reflective face, no texture

Stretch

5% garment stretch is the safe ceiling before hairline cracking

Peel

Cold peel on the foil transfer, 20 to 30 seconds to cool before lifting the carrier. A CMYK transfer pressed over it follows standard DTF peel.

Real-World Applications

Where this actually gets ordered.

These are the recurring jobs behind the orders we see for this product. Not marketing filler, actual production programs.

  • Bridal and bridesmaid tees, tanks, and robes

  • Bachelorette weekend drop programs

  • Anniversary, milestone birthday, and reunion apparel

  • Boutique retail tees with a metallic logo accent

  • Concert and tour merch upgrade tier

  • Corporate anniversary and award-recognition apparel

  • Holiday-drop retail apparel with metallic accent artwork

  • Small clothing brand hype drops running under 200 pieces

Artwork Recommendations

What to send us so the print lands right.

Foil works best with bold, chunky artwork. Send solid-fill designs or vector logos. If only part of the design is metallic, send it as two files rather than one tagged file. Each half is measured and quoted on its own square inches, so the two files do not have to be the same size.

File Specifications

Preferred format
AI, EPS, or SVG (vector)
Also accepted
PDF, PNG with transparent background
Resolution (raster)
300 DPI at final press size
File split
Fully metallic design, one file. Partly metallic design, two files: metallic areas only, and the CMYK artwork with the metallic areas removed
Canvas
Metallic contained inside the color artwork: export both files at the same canvas size, unmoved and un-cropped, and the two transfers register themselves. Metal that outlines the color or extends past it: two genuinely different sizes, each file sized to its own artwork
Minimum stroke
1.5 pt for metallic areas
Maximum press size
13" x 19"

Avoid these in artwork

  • Halftone gradients in the metallic areas

  • Text under 12 pt with foil applied

  • Overlapping metallic colors, each metallic color is its own transfer and its own press

  • Cropping or repositioning either file after the canvases have been matched, the two transfers stop lining up

Reprint Guarantee

If we mis-produce it, we reprint it free.

Every Golden DTF order carries the same written guarantee. Email us within 14 days with your order number and a photo, a production lead reviews it within one business day, and approved reprints ship free with tracking. You never re-upload and never re-pay.

Color off the file you sent

If the printed transfer does not reproduce the file you uploaded, allowing for the difference between a backlit screen and printed ink, we reprint it. We calibrate our press against the same target ICC every day and keep a press log for every run.

Missing ink or dropout

White ink dropouts, thin black lines that did not lay down, or missing detail from a small text run: if it left our shop that way, we reprint it.

Film delamination before press

If the PET film separates before you press the transfer, that is a materials defect, not user error. We track film lot numbers per production run.

Wrong size or wrong file

If our team packed the wrong artwork or produced at the wrong size, we cover the reprint plus the reship.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about dtf transfers.

How does the foil DTF process work?
The metallic areas are PRINTED as their own transfer. If the whole design is metallic you press one transfer, once. If only part of it is metallic you receive two transfers and the order matters: press the FOIL transfer first, then lay the full-color CMYK transfer over it and press again. Foil is opaque, so once it is down you cannot see through it to align anything on top. CMYK is translucent, so you can see the foil through it and line it up accurately. When the metallic sits inside the artwork, export both on the same canvas for exact registration. When the metal outlines or extends past the color, the two are different sizes and each is sized to its own artwork.
Are gold and silver the only foil colors available?
Gold and silver are the production-stock colors and ship with every order. Custom foil colors like rose gold, copper, holographic, and prism are available on request with a 24 to 48 hour lead time for film procurement.
Is foil DTF wash-durable?
Yes. The foil bonds chemically to the polyamide adhesive layer of the DTF transfer, not just to the garment. Wash testing holds the bond through 40-plus industrial wash cycles. Wash inside-out, cold water, tumble low. Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
What designs work best with foil DTF?
Bold designs, solid fills, large text, and thick line work all foil cleanly. Fine detail under 1.5 pt stroke weight can break up, because a hairline of metallic has very little area to hold onto the garment and it is also the hardest thing to register a second transfer against. Stick to chunky, high-impact graphics for the best metallic effect.
Can foil be combined with regular CMYK on the same design?
Yes, and it is TWO transfers, not one. You upload two files: one containing ONLY the metallic areas with the color removed, and one containing the full-color artwork with the metallic areas REMOVED. Press the FOIL transfer first, then the CMYK transfer on top of it, because foil is opaque and CMYK is translucent enough to line up over it. If the metallic sits inside the artwork, export both on the same canvas at the same size for exact registration; if the metal outlines or extends past the color, size each file to its own artwork. We do not separate a single combined file for you, so sending one merged file is the most common reason an order has to be paused and re-sent.
How do I prepare the two files?
Start from your finished design and save two versions. In the first, delete the parts you want metallic and keep everything else: that is your CMYK file. In the second, delete everything EXCEPT the parts you want metallic: that is your foil file. When the metallic sits INSIDE the artwork, keep both on the SAME canvas at the SAME dimensions and do not move, resize or re-crop either one, because that is what drops the foil onto the CMYK in exactly the right place. When the metal OUTLINES the design or runs past it, the foil file is legitimately larger and you size each one to its own artwork. Transparent PNG at 300 DPI is ideal.
What if my whole design is metallic?
Then you only need ONE file and one transfer. Upload the design to the foil product, choose the full-foil option, and press it once like any other transfer. The two-file process only applies when part of the design stays full color.
What fabrics work with foil DTF?
Cotton, polyester, silk, and most synthetics. Cotton is where foil performs best. Tri-blends are NOT recommended: the rayon content cannot take the temperature the foil needs, and the metallic layer cracks at the lower temperature you would have to drop to. On polyester, nylon, wool, and rayon you must stay at or below 290 F to avoid dye migration, distortion, or felting, which means the foil finish will be softer and less mirror-like than on cotton. Press a sample on every heat-sensitive blank before running a job.
What are the press settings for foil DTF?
On cotton: 338 F (170 C) for 18 seconds with heavy pressure, then COLD peel. Let the transfer cool 20 to 30 seconds before you pull the carrier film. After peeling, re-press the finished design at the same settings. Re-pressing 2 to 3 times is recommended, and it is what stops the metallic layer cracking or wrinkling after the first few wash and dry cycles. Expect a slightly matte gold finish after re-pressing rather than a wet mirror shine, which is normal and is the durable state. These numbers are the cotton figure. Heat-sensitive fabrics have lower ceilings, see the fabric question above.
