Definition
Foil DTF is a transfer that delivers metallic gold, silver, or specialty foil color in any artwork shape including gradients and photographic detail. Unlike chrome heat transfer vinyl (HTV) which requires plotter cutting and weeding, foil DTF prints any design as a metallic surface in a single press cycle. Golden DTF offers gold and silver foil DTF at $0.12 per square inch with no minimums.
How Foil DTF Is Constructed
Foil DTF starts with a standard DTF print on PET carrier film. Instead of a standard CMYK ink layer, the design is printed in a high-pigment foil-receptive ink. A metallic foil layer is then laminated onto the print under heat and pressure. The foil bonds only where the receptive ink is present, taking on the exact shape of the printed design. The result is a metallic transfer with the design definition of a digital print.
One Transfer or Two
If the entire design is metallic, it is one file and one transfer, pressed once like any other DTF transfer. If only part of the design is metallic, it is two files and two transfers: one carrying only the metallic areas with the full color removed, one carrying the full-color CMYK artwork with the metallic areas removed. Sizing the two files is a judgment call, not a fixed rule. When the metallic areas sit inside the color artwork, the simplest path is to export both at the same canvas size, unmoved and un-cropped, because identical canvases register the two halves for you. When the metal outlines the design or extends past the color, the metallic file is deliberately wider than the CMYK file, so size each one to its own artwork and align them at the press.
Press Order, Foil First
On a two-transfer design the foil is always pressed first and the CMYK is pressed on top of it. Gold and silver foil is opaque, so once it is down there is nothing to see through and no way to register artwork over it. The CMYK carrier is translucent, so the pressed metallic shows through and the color half can be lined up accurately. Pressing color first leaves the foil with nothing to align to.
Application Settings
Foil DTF applies with a standard heat press at 170 C (338 F) for 18 seconds with heavy pressure, roughly 100 kg of platen force. Use cold peel: wait 20 to 30 seconds for the metallic to cool before lifting the carrier film. Then re-press the peeled design through a Teflon sheet at the same 338 F for 18 seconds, two to three times. The re-press is the step that keeps the metallic from cracking or wrinkling after the garment is washed and dried, so it is not optional.
After re-pressing, the metallic settles into a slightly matte gold finish. That is the correct, durable result. A wet mirror shine straight off the press is the state that fails in the wash, not the state to aim for.
These are the settings for cotton. Heat-sensitive fabrics such as polyester, poly blends, and rayon hold a lower temperature ceiling to prevent dye migration and fabric damage, and below the full temperature the metallic bonds softer and reads less reflective. Test press the actual blank before any production run.

Substrate Compatibility
Foil DTF bonds to cotton, polyester, most synthetics, and silk. Tri-blend is not recommended. Cotton is the baseline the full press specification is written for. Polyester and poly blends hold a lower temperature ceiling to prevent dye migration, so the metallic on those fabrics is softer and less reflective and a test press on the actual blank is required. Test first on aggressively dye-sublimated polyester to confirm no dye migration into the metallic. Avoid silicone-treated and PU-coated rain gear which resist the bond.
Foil DTF vs Chrome HTV
Chrome HTV is a solid metallic vinyl that requires plotter cutting and hand weeding, limiting designs to solid shapes. Foil DTF prints any design as a metallic surface in a single press cycle. For multi-color designs with metallic accents, foil DTF pairs with standard DTF across two press cycles to deliver designs impossible with HTV alone.
Durability
Foil DTF holds bond integrity through 40-plus industrial wash cycles when applied correctly. The foil layer is laminated into the ink stack, so it does not flake or peel like cheap heat transfer foil. Follow standard DTF wash care: inside out, cold water, mild detergent, tumble low, no bleach, no fabric softener.
Pricing
Foil DTF prices at $0.12 per square inch at Golden DTF. A 5 by 5 inch foil design is $3.00. A 10 by 10 inch foil design is $12.00. On a two-transfer design each half is priced on its own square inches, the metallic at $0.12 per square inch and the full-color half at the standard DTF rate of $0.06 per square inch, so the two halves are quoted separately and appear as two lines in the cart. That is also why the two files do not have to match in size. No minimum order, 24-hour turnaround. Available in gold and silver as standard production lines.
