How to Order DTF Transfers for a 5K Race Tee
A race tee is a one-shot order with a hard deadline. Get the design size, count, and timing right and you will have happy runners, no leftover inventory, and money to spare.
Why DTF Beats Screen Printing for Race Tees
Screen printing requires a minimum order per color per design, and that minimum rarely lines up with your actual size breakdown. You end up over-ordering mediums you never hand out. For a 5K with 90 finishers spread across six sizes, that waste adds up fast.
DTF has no minimums. You order exactly what registration data tells you to order: 12 smalls, 20 mediums, 25 larges. The cost is based on square inches of print, not a per-shirt screen setup charge. You pay for what you print, nothing extra.
Sizing the Design
Most race tees carry two prints: a front left chest logo around 3.5 by 3.5 inches and a full back design around 11 by 10 inches. At $0.06 per square inch, that back print runs $6.60 and the chest logo adds $0.74. Before discounts you are at $7.34 per shirt for decoration alone.
Once your transfer order crosses $150, you hit the 17% volume discount. At $250 you save 22 percent. If 80 runners each get a front chest and back print, your order clears that threshold easily and your per-shirt decoration cost drops to around $5.73.
Gang Sheets Cut Costs Further
A gang sheet tiles multiple copies of your designs onto one large transfer sheet so you only pay for the printed square inches, with no dead space around each graphic. A 22-by-60-inch sheet can hold all 80 front chest logos in a single order.
For events with a front and a back print, build two gang sheets: one for chests, one for backs. Sort back prints by size run on the sheet so your presser can move quickly without hunting for the right graphic.
Timeline: How Far Out to Order
Lock your artwork at least two weeks before race day. That covers production and shipping with room to reorder if you change your mind. Orders placed before 1 pm ET ship the same day, so most continental US addresses receive transfers within two to three business days.
Do not wait for final registration numbers. Order based on your current count plus 10 to 15 percent. Unused transfers store flat for months and leftover race tee transfers often get pressed onto volunteer shirts at the next event.
Artwork: What to Send
Submit a PNG with a transparent background at 300 DPI minimum. If your race logo was designed for the web at 72 DPI, ask your designer to export a high-resolution version or rebuild it from a vector source before submitting.
White elements in your design print correctly because DTF lays down a white base automatically, but your file must include those white shapes explicitly. If you are unsure whether your file is set up correctly, send it to support before placing the order.
