Who This Is For

The shop or brand that should hit order.

Every product on Golden is opinionated. If your work matches one of the descriptions below, this is the right pick. If not, keep reading and we will point you to the right one.

  • Print shops running short and mid-runs (1 to 100 pieces) where screen setup does not pay for itself.

  • Custom apparel brands launching photo-real designs, gradients, or artwork with a lot of color count.

  • Team and spirit-wear decorators printing variable names and numbers alongside a main graphic.

  • Etsy and Shopify sellers moving up from HTV who need vibrant multi-color prints without a $8k print engine.

  • Embroidery shops adding a full-color option so they stop turning away photo-detail jobs.

Who Should Skip This

When another product will serve you better.

We would rather lose the sale than ship you the wrong product. Every case below is real, from customer service calls. If any of them describes your job, click through to the alternative before you order.

You are decorating tumblers, glass, or hard goods.

Standard DTF needs a heat press and a fabric substrate. For rigid surfaces (Stanley-style tumblers, mugs, phone cases, wood, metal) use UV DTF instead. Peel and stick, no heat.

Custom UV DTF Transfers

You are running the same one-color logo across 500 plus units.

Past roughly a 500-piece single-color run, plastisol screen print beats DTF on unit cost. DTF wins on setup, color range, and short-run flexibility. Screens win on high-volume single-color.

See the DTF vs Screens breakdown

You want a puffed, dimensional finish.

Standard DTF sits flat on the garment. If you need the raised, foamy look for retro streetwear or 3D branding, order Puff DTF instead. Same base film, different powder chemistry.

Puff DTF Transfers

You want the stitched embroidered look without the machine time.

Fauxbroidery is DTF printed to mimic satin stitches, thread color, and outline. For hats and structured caps that would normally get embroidered, Fauxbroidery presses in 15 seconds instead of hooping.

Fabric Compatibility

What we have actually pressed this on.

DTF is fabric-agnostic on paper. In practice it is not. Every fabric below has been press-tested on our floor. Use this table before you order, not after.

  • 100% cotton (ringspun, combed)

    Excellent

Sweet spot. 310 to 320 F, 12 seconds, medium-firm, warm peel. 50 plus washes at full opacity.

  • 50/50 cotton-poly blend

    Excellent

Same settings as cotton. Slightly less shrinkage on first wash, cleaner corners on long-term wear.

  • 100% polyester (performance, jersey)

    Good

Drop press temp to 285 to 300 F, 10 seconds. Higher heat can trigger dye migration on colored polys. Always test a scrap first if the fabric was dyed after knitting.

  • Tri-blend (cotton/poly/rayon)

    Excellent

The retail-feel favorite. Soft hand, drapes well, DTF lays flat and moves with the fabric. Great for boutique drops.

  • Nylon (jackets, bags, performance)

    Workable

Use a low-temp adhesive powder. Press at 260 F for 8 seconds with hover-and-press to avoid scorching. Not the strongest DTF fabric, HTV often beats it here.

  • Cotton or blended fleece (10 oz plus)

    Excellent

Hoodies and heavy sweatshirts are a top DTF use case. Extra pre-press for 3 seconds to flatten pile, then standard cycle.

  • Canvas and duck (totes, aprons)

    Excellent

Presses cleanly, holds detail. Use firmer pressure since canvas has more give. Great for aprons, tote bags, chef aprons.

  • Leather and vegan leather

    Workable

Short dwell time (6 to 8 seconds), lower temp (275 F), firm pressure. Real leather scorches easily. Vegan leather peels warm to hot depending on backing.

Material and Feel

What is actually on the film, and how it wears.

What is on the film

A CMYK color layer, a 100% opaque white underbase, and a hot-melt polyurethane adhesive powder, all sandwiched between a PET carrier film and a matte matte-finish release. Commercial USA-made pigment inks calibrated daily. Rated to 50 plus wash cycles under standard care. Stretch tolerance of roughly 15 percent before the print starts to whiten at the edges. The film itself is 3.5 mil, thick enough to survive shipping folded but thin enough to conform to garment texture during press.

How it feels on the shirt

First few washes, the transfer has a slight rubbery hand, softer than a plastisol screen print but firmer than a water-based discharge. By the third wash the polyurethane bond has broken in and the transfer moves with the fabric like a printed layer, not a decal. On tri-blends and lightweight cotton, DTF disappears into the drape. On heavy 10 oz fleece it stays visibly present, which is what you want for graphic hoodies. Print weight adds roughly 12 grams per square foot of coverage.

Real-World Uses

Where this product actually goes to work.

Not a marketing list. These are the jobs decorators, brands, and shops order this product for every week.

  • Retail apparel drops with photo-real graphics

  • Team spirit wear with variable names and numbers

  • Workwear and uniform runs of 25 to 250 pieces

  • Restaurant staff shirts with logos plus name embroidery replacement

  • Streetwear and boutique brand cut-and-sew runs

  • Event tees where the design changes every month

  • Corporate onboarding kits with logo plus employee name

  • Charity, church, and school fundraising shirts

Artwork Requirements

Prep your file right the first time.

Ninety percent of print quality issues trace back to the file. These are the specs our production floor wants to see when the job hits the queue.

File types

PNG with transparent background is the cleanest input. AI, EPS, SVG, and PDF also accepted for vector art. JPG works but the full rectangle prints unless you use the background removal step at upload.

Resolution

300 DPI at the final press size is the standard. 200 DPI is workable for large-scale prints (over 10 inches wide). Below 150 DPI, pixel edges start showing on smooth curves.

Color and profile

Files convert internally from RGB to a calibrated CMYK profile. Deep blacks come out slightly warmer than a monitor preview because DTF whites brighten the black underneath. If exact Pantone match is critical (retail brands, corporate identity), reach out before you order and we will tell you what we can hold to on our press.

Sizing and cropping

The system reads the bounding box of your artwork. Transparent space inside the bounding box costs the same as printed area because that is what reserves film time. Crop your file tight to the design before uploading if you want the price down.

Frequently bought together

The three items every first DTF order should include.

These pair with the product above because we would actually recommend them in a real production conversation. Not cart co-occurrence, not margin-hunting. Add what applies to your job.

Frequently Bought Together

The short-run stack

Custom by size covers the odd-shape jobs. These three cover the mistakes that ruin short runs.

$0.29 per transfer to skip the scissors. On any job over 24 pieces this pays for itself in labor.

Reprint Guarantee

If we mis-produce it, we reprint it free.

Every Golden DTF order carries the same written guarantee. Email us within 14 days with your order number and a photo, a production lead reviews it within one business day, and approved reprints ship free with tracking. You never re-upload and never re-pay.

Color off the file you sent

If the printed transfer does not reproduce the file you uploaded, allowing for the difference between a backlit screen and printed ink, we reprint it. We calibrate our press against the same target ICC every day and keep a press log for every run.

Missing ink or dropout

White ink dropouts, thin black lines that did not lay down, or missing detail from a small text run: if it left our shop that way, we reprint it.

Film delamination before press

If the PET film separates before you press the transfer, that is a materials defect, not user error. We track film lot numbers per production run.

Wrong size or wrong file

If our team packed the wrong artwork or produced at the wrong size, we cover the reprint plus the reship.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about custom dtf transfers.

What sizes are available for custom DTF transfers by size?
Any size up to 22 inches wide by any practical length. The system reads the bounding box of your uploaded design, so the transfer matches your art dimensions exactly. There is no fixed size menu and no minimum size requirement above 1 inch.
How is square inch pricing calculated?
Pricing is based on the width times the height of your design's bounding box, then multiplied by $0.06. A 10 by 12 inch design is 120 square inches at $7.20. Transparent areas inside the bounding box are included in the calculation because the print area on film is what reserves machine time.
What is the minimum size for a custom DTF transfer?
Functional minimum is roughly 1 inch on the smallest dimension. Below that, fine detail compresses and the white underbase becomes hard to register cleanly. There is no minimum order count. Order one transfer at any size.
Can I order a single custom DTF transfer with no minimum?
Yes. There is no minimum order count and no setup fee, so a single transfer is a normal order. Volume tiers then apply automatically as your cart total grows, starting at 8 percent off at $49 and reaching 50 percent off at $3,800. You never apply a code or ask for a quote.
What file format should I upload?
PNG with a transparent background is preferred for the cleanest result. PDF, AI, EPS, and SVG are also accepted. JPG is supported but the entire image area will print unless you use the background removal tool on the upload step.
What is the turnaround time for custom by-size DTF transfers?
Standard production turnaround is 24 hours. Orders placed before 1 PM EST on weekdays typically ship the same or next business day. VIP Priority members receive guaranteed 24-hour fulfillment.
