Can I Use Foil DTF Transfers on 100% Polyester?
Foil DTF on 100% polyester is possible but challenging. Temperature must stay below 300F to prevent dye migration, well under the 338F the metallic wants for full activation. Lighter-colored polyester garments are the safest candidates.
Why This Works
Polyester's dye migration risk forces a lower temperature ceiling of 275-295F, so this is a deliberate compromise against the full 338F specification. On dark polyester, foil DTF is not recommended at all. On white or light polyester, press at 280-290F for 18 seconds with heavy pressure, then cold peel: wait 20 to 30 seconds for the metallic to cool before lifting the carrier. The re-press still applies, two to three cycles at the same reduced temperature and 18 seconds. Below the full temperature the metallic bonds softer and reads less reflective, so a test press on the actual blank is required before any production run.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

- Dark-colored polyester (red, black, royal blue) has the highest dye migration risk.
- Do NOT use cotton settings (325F+) on polyester, this will cause scorching and dye migration.
- Dye migration can be delayed, do not stack hot polyester garments. Lay flat to air cool.
- Different polyester brands use different dyes that react differently at the same temperature. Always test each brand.

- Use low-melt / low-temp DTF adhesive powder when available, it activates at lower temperatures.
- The DTF white underbase acts as a physical barrier against dye migration, but it is not foolproof at high temperatures.
