Specialty transfers are DTF-adjacent decoration methods that add dimensional or reflective effects flat DTF cannot produce. Puff raises the print off the fabric with a foaming compound activated by heat. Foil bonds a metallic layer to a DTF adhesive base for a mirror finish.
Specialty costs more than flat DTF, sometimes significantly. Puff, foil, and glitter add 40 to 100 percent to the transfer cost depending on the finish and coverage. That is because each specialty layer is a second pass on our production floor, and consumable costs (foil rolls, glitter powder, puff compound) are real. If your customer will not pay the premium retail price, do not order the premium production method.
Foil does not survive abrasive garments or bleach. Foil on a cotton hoodie will last fifty-plus washes with reasonable care. Foil on a rough canvas apron that gets bleached weekly will start looking rough after ten. Match the finish to the intended garment lifecycle. If the shirt will get abused, use flat DTF or puff instead.
Puff has a size ceiling before it looks cartoonish. Puff rises three millimeters at optimal settings, and that looks great on chunky text, bold logos, and iconography. Try to puff a thin script font or fine linework and it either fails to rise cleanly or looks like a comic book bubble. If your art has a lot of thin detail, use fauxbroidery, not puff.
Glow, holographic, and reflective have longer lead times. Standard DTF ships in one to two business days. Specialty finishes are one to three business days depending on which effect and stack. If you need it by Thursday, order by Monday, not Wednesday. Rush is available but expensive and we would rather set expectations honestly.

Every specialty finish in this collection has been production-tested on a full run of at least one hundred garments before we listed it. We do not stock effects we cannot ship consistently. That means the puff we ship rises predictably to about three millimeters at 320 F for fifteen seconds, the foil holds through fifty washes if pressed correctly, and the fauxbroidery does not crack when you fold the shirt. Where an effect has a real limitation (glow fades over years, foil scratches on abrasive garments), we say so in the tradeoffs section below, not in fine print.

How long does puff last through the wash?
Correctly pressed puff holds up for forty to sixty washes with color and rise intact. The puff compound gradually compresses over time and the print flattens slightly by wash sixty. Turn the shirt inside out and wash cold to extend life.
Can I combine puff and foil on one design?
Yes, but it requires a specific production stack that adds a day or two of lead time. Send the file with clear layer separations (puff areas on one layer, foil areas on another) and note it in the order comments. We do this regularly for luxury branding runs.
Do specialty transfers work on tri-blend?
Puff and fauxbroidery work great on tri-blend at 300 F for ten seconds. Foil is trickier on tri-blend because the rayon can scorch at foil press temperatures. Order a specimen kit and test if you are running tri-blend in production.
Is there a minimum order for specialty?
No, but specialty tier pricing kicks in at a higher order value than standard DTF because production cost per transfer is higher. Volume tiers still apply and stack toward the overall order total.
Which specialty finish photographs best for Instagram?
Foil and holographic photograph the most dramatically. Puff is a runner-up because the shadow and dimension read well in flat-lay photography. Glow only works if you can photograph in low light and requires phone exposure adjustment.
